The Georgian Revival u-shaped townhouses at 1960 Jackson Street were built in 1918 and 1924 by Walter Bliss for the widow of Swedish-born shipping magnate William Matson. After his death in 1917, Mrs. Matson built 1960 Jackson, the larger house to the left of the courtyard for herself. In 1924 she built 1950 Jackson for her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth. Following Mrs. Matson's death and the Roths' purchase of Filoli, the Bourn country estate on the San Mateo Peninsula, the twin houses were sold to the Swedish government to be used as their consulate. In 1987 they were purchased by the German government and remodeled to house their consulate.
